Restaurant.com, a site that sells discounted restaurant gift certificates, has teamed up with ESP ExactTarget to run its e-mail program and to sell its offerings to the ExactTarget community. Under the terms of the agreement, Restaurant.com is using ExactTarget's e-mail tools to make its e-mail marketing efforts more targeted. In addition, ExactTarget clients can now add customized restaurant gift certificates as incentives to their interactive campaigns for wholesale prices.

FCC makes 'white spaces' available for broadband

Citing the potential to improve wire­less broadband access for consumers, the Federal Communications Commission voted last week to make the unused TV spectrum, commonly referred to as "white spaces," available to the public. The move relates to the FCC's mandate that television stations switch from broad­casting in analog to digital by February, meaning a large swatch of airwaves would be opened up for potential uses.

Agency.com sues iCrossing for $19.5M

Omnicom's Agency.com has filed a $19.5 million lawsuit against digital advertising and search agency iCrossing claiming it cinched several of Agency.com's key clients and top executives when CEO Donald Scales left Agency.com for iCrossing. The suit, filed in state court in Dallas, TX, alleges that the departure of executives and loss of clients dating back to 2006 ultimately led to the closing of Agency.com's Dallas office, specifically through breach of contract, tortuous interference and conspiring to misappropriate proprietary information and trade secrets.
 

Google pulls out of proposed Yahoo agreement

DHL to slash 9,500 US jobs

In order to meet its financial goals, Deutsche Post World Net, parent company of DHL Express, today said it will discontinue its US-only air and ground services, resulting in the loss of 9,500 jobs. The move will allow the U.S. Express business to cut its operating costs from $5.4 billion to under $1 billion - a drop of more than 80%.
 

Circuit City files for bankruptcy protection

Circuit City Stores Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and has eliminated 700 corporate, regional and district support positions.
 

Scripps Co. builds online amidst cutbacks

The E.W. Scripps Co., publisher of Denver's Rocky Mountain News and other local newspapers, is strengthening its online focus after seeing revenues decline in the third quarter. The company, which also operates 10 television stations, reported a 9% revenue decrease between Q3 2007 and Q3 2008, thanks, in part, to soft ad sales.

Scripps announces newspaper staff cuts

The EW Scripps Co. is laying off about 400 of its newspaper employees as part of a restructuring, a move expected to save $15 million. The Cincinnati-based Scripps reported its third quarter results today for its television, newspaper, and licensing and syndication businesses, which showed a 9% drop in revenue of $230 million, compared with $253 million in Q3 2007.
 

Talbots to sell J. Jill

The Talbots Inc. is pursuing a sale of the J. Jill brand in order to focus on its core Talbots business - a move that comes just two years after it acquired the J. Jill business for $517 million. "We have made great strides in re-energizing the Talbots brand and are encouraged by both our existing and lapsed customers' response to our product and marketing efforts," said Trudy F. Sullivan, president and CEO at Talbots, in a statement.
 

Hearst shutters O at Home

With bricks-and-mortar stores delivering some of the worst sales performances in decades in October, a new crop of shopping search engines, including Toys.com and iStorez.com, which officially launches this week, are hoping to reverse the numbers by offering enhanced experiences for consumers and unique cost structures to retailers. "The good news is that [online retail sales] growth will outpace nearly every other sector of consumer spending" during an otherwise lean holiday season, said Sucharita Malpuru, a principal analyst at Forrester Research, in an e-mail to DMNews.
 

CollegeClickTV offers students campus view

CollegeClickTV.com was created by Pere Partnership agency head Glenn Pere.
