Tim Armstrong, SVP of Google, has been named chairman and CEO of AOL. Randy Falco, who currently holds the title, as well as AOL's COO Ron Grant, will leave the company after a transition period. The announcement was made by chairman and CEO of AOL's parent company Time Warner Inc., Jeff Bewkes. Armstrong will start at AOL on April 7.

Transcontinental reports Q1 loss

Commercial printer Transcontinental reported consolidated totaled $604.1 million in the first quarter ended January 31, compared to $596 million in the same quarter of 2008. However, excluding acquisitions and the positive impact of paper prices and the exchange rate, the company said its consolidated revenues dropped 10%. Transcontinental said its business was particularly affected by the cancellation, decrease or postponement of promotional and advertising campaigns, mainly by financial institutions and car manufacturers, affecting its US direct mail activities, magazine publishing and commercial products printing.
 

Microsoft Dynamics CRM looks for growth

Microsoft Dynamics CRM has partnered with ZoomInfo and Hoover's databases and offered up some client incentives this week in a major push for increased adoption in the business-to-business space. Users of Microsoft Dynamics CRM, which run a gamut of industries from education to health to manufacturing, will now be able to access Hoover's and ZoomInfo's databases directly through the CRM system — provided they pay for the added service.

Google releases behavioral advertising

As privacy groups continue to push for legislation around behavioral targeting, Google has introduced its version of this kind of advertising that serves up ads based on a consumer's previous online activities. Calling it "interested-based advertising," Google is launching the service in beta on YouTube and partner sites. The ads will pull from categories of interest such as sports, gardening, cars or pets, based on the types of sites and pages a consumer visits.
 

SEMPO cuts US search spend estimates by over $2 billion

The Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) estimates that search engine marketing (SEM) will total $13.5 billion for 2008. This number is down from an estimate of $15.7 billion made early last year, according to SEMPO's yearly State of Search Engine Marketing study. SEMPO projects that 88% of the $13.5 billion is being spent on paid search advertisements, 11% on natural search engine optimization (SEO) and 1% on SEM technologies including leasing, agency solutions and in-house development, according to the study, conducted by Radar Research.
 

Disney launches fan membership program

Disney has launched a comprehensive membership program called D23 that includes a subscription to a new quarterly publication, offers to attend special events and purchase exclusive merchandise and a membership certificate and card. The program is the first official community for Disney fans, according to a statement from the company.

Texas-based Frost Bank has tapped Allegiance Inc. to add voice-of-the-customer capabilities to its CRM approach. Frost, the banking, investments and insurance subsidiary of Cullen/Frost Bankers Inc., will use Allegiance's CustomerPulse and ActiveSurvey tools as part of an effort to improve customer loyalty and reduce churn.
 

eWayDirect adds social networking to platform

Rodale Inc. will close men's magazine Best Life after the May issue, according to reports. Parent company Rodale would not comment on the reports. Best Life, which was founded in 2004, had a circulation of about 500,000.
