USPS marks Earth Day with green initiatives

The United States Postal Service launched a campaign today to increase awareness and create results for energy conservation at a "Turning Over a Green Leaf" event in celebration of Earth Day. The agency, which says it wants to reduce energy use 30% by 2015, exhibited "green" initiatives at the event, including the USPS' green Web site, a carbon and lifestyle calculator, an office supplies swap Web site, energy-saving tips, and Cradle to Cradle-certified "green" packaging and shipping supplies.
 

Razorfish names Bob Lord CEO, Kokich to become chairman

Digital agency Razorfish has named Bob Lord CEO. Clark Kokich, who has been CEO since 2007, will take on the newly created role of chairman. All of Razorfish's presidents will now report to Lord.

KFC has kicked off a new multichannel campaign, called "UNThink," to promote its first foray into grilled chicken products. Draftfcb Chicago, KFC's agency of record since 2003, produced the campaign, which spans digital, mobile, print, TV and out-of-home ads.
 

Direct Group to combine direct mail and fulfillment operations

Direct marketing solutions provider Direct Group will be consolidating its direct mail, digital printing and fulfillment operations into one location over the remainder of this year and anticipates eliminating approximately 50 positions as a result. "We want to optimize our associates, equipment and facilities infrastructures," said Don McKenzie, president and CEO at Direct Group, of the move.
 

Kohl's to launch exclusive line with The Hills star

Kohl's Corp. will launch the exclusive lifestyle brand LC Lauren Conrad in October in approximately 300 stores and on Kohls.com. The multi-channel merchant is betting on Conrad's high awareness and fashion credibility among young contemporary customers. Conrad is best known as the star of the reality series The Hills. She began her fashion career as an intern at Teen Vogue.
 

1-800-FLOWERS.COM's Mother's Day campaign uses social media

Floral and gift multichannel merchant 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has launched a Mother's Day marketing campaign that includes an online destination where visitors can share stories about outstanding mothers and which uses Bazaarvoice's social networking tool Bazaarvoice Stories. Consumers can share their own personal story of a mom who has touched their life at www.spotlightamom.com through April 29.
 

Agency Digitaria opens New York office

The new Manhattan office is being opened to support new business and global growth. The United States Postal Service has issued further specifics on its proposed "summer sale." The sale will run from July 1 through September 30 and will be open to mailers who mailed more than one million Standard letters and/or flats from October 1, 2007, through March 31, 2008.

Yahoo profits down 78%, cuts 5% of work force

Yahoo has reported a 78% drop in profits in the first quarter of 2009 to $118.7 million, compared to $536.8 million in the first quarter of last year. Yahoo also is cutting more than 600 jobs, 5% of its worldwide work force. Total revenues were $1.58 billion, down 13% from 1.817 billion a year ago. Gross profits also were down from $1.06 billion in 2008 to $879 million this year.
 

Survey: DM job market may have hit bottom

While the direct marketing industry continues to be hit by layoffs and hiring freezes, there are signs of some improvement over the recent past, especially on the agency side, according to the latest employment report from Bernhart Associates. "Overall, hiring levels are still falling but the worst of the job losses may be over," said Jerry Bernhart, principal at Bernhart Associates Executive Search LLC, in a statement.

Fry to launch new Web site for Pendleton

After weeks of "will they or won't they?" speculation, Oracle Corp. has entered an agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems in a deal worth $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt. Oracle is billing the acquisition as "an industry changing event."
 

Quebecor renews printing contract with Forbes

Quebecor World Inc. has signed a new multiyear agreement to print Forbes and related magazine titles, renewing a relationship that has been in place for more than 25 years. The agreement includes premedia and logistics services for Forbes, which has a circulation of more than 900,000 and is published 26 times per year on a bi-weekly basis. The agreement also covers the printing and distribution of ForbesLife and ForbesLife Executive Women, and related ancillary printing projects.
