Database marketing agency Merkle has acquired data quality services provider CognitiveData, a company that has quickly grown since coming on the scene in 2001 as a result of its proprietary data hygiene technology. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. 
The move reflects the growing importance of data and analytics to today's marketers and, therefore, to marketing service providers and agencies.

The 20,000-circ paper — Arizona's oldest — will live on as a Web site that focuses only on opinions, with no news or community updates. Gannett will uphold its joint publishing partnership with Lee Enterprises' Arizona Daily Star, also based in Tucson.

The Federal Trade Commission today filed suit in federal court in Illinois against companies it said were responsible for millions of deceptive phone calls offering extended vehicle warranties. In two related complaints, the FTC said it took action against both the promoter of the warranties, as well as the telemarketing company it hired to carry out its deceptive campaign.

Oregon-based craft beer distillery Deschutes Brewery began distributing in Utah today, bringing its total to 14 US states. The beer company selected North and Campbell Consulting Group Inc. as its agencies of record for creative and public relations earlier this week. The new agency appointments were made to help the 20-year old, privately owned beer maker manage its marketing as it moves toward becoming a national brand, according to Jason Randles, marketing manager at Deschutes.

"Zippo has a deep heritage with music," said Rick Gardinier, chief digital officer at agency Brunner, which recently launched a Zippo campaign that partners the brand with Rolling Stone magazine and RealNetworks for a microsite in support of indie rock music.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM, which is already used by some of Autotrader's sister companies, was chosen after the company reviewed various off-the shelf tools and its own legacy system

Report: Online customer satisfaction declines

Customer satisfaction with many of the largest online retailers fell 3% since last year, according to the annual Top 100 Online Retail Satisfaction Index from ForeSee Results and FGI Research. The research, which employs the methodology of the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), is based on surveys of over 22,000 visitors to the top 100 e-retail Web sites by sales volume, as reported in the 2009 Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. This year's aggregate score of 73 indicates online retailers may be dropping the ball.

RR Donnelley & Sons has expressed interest in acquiring all or substantially all of Quebecor World's assets and properties, and is offering to pay Quebecor debtors approximately $957 million cash and 30 million shares, valued at $394 million as of the closing price on May 11.
 

Systemax wins Circuit City's online business at auction

Systemax Inc. won Circuit City's e-commerce business at an auction held this week, subject to court approval. Last month, multichannel electronics merchant Systemax entered a stalking horse agreement valued at $6.5 million with Circuit City, which began liquidating assets in January after filing for bankruptcy protection in November.
