Alliance Q1 income falls 44%, despite growth in some divisions

Alliance Data Systems Corp., parent company to Epsilon and LoyaltyOne, reported results for its first quarter, ended March 31, showing that first-quarter net income has decreased nearly 44% since Q1 last year. Revenue for the company dropped 4%, to $480 million, while cash earnings per diluted share were up slightly — from $1 to $1.19.
 

New York trims print schedule

New York magazine will trim two issues — June 22 and August 17 — from its summer publishing schedule in an effort to cut costs. The weekly, which has a total paid and verified circulation of 431,626, cites an expected ad slowdown as the reason behind the cuts.

Kevin Rose, founder and chief architect of community content-ranking site Digg, shared his thoughts on how user-generated content can be monetized and used to engage consumers during this morning's ad:tech San Francisco keynote. Evan Hansen, editor-in-chief of Wired.com, interviewed the entrepreneur. Rose said that his site, which was largely founded to democratize content online, was now seeking to create a way for consumers to respond directly to advertisers about products and promotions.
 

UPS earnings drop nearly 56%

UPS Inc. today reported first quarter revenue of $10.9 billion, down 13.7% from the same quarter last year, and saw its earnings fall nearly 56% to $401 million, compared to profit of $906 million a year ago.

Kmart, CVS, Walgreens and H-E-B are the latest retailers to put printable coupons on their Web sites supplied through Coupons.com's digital coupon distribution network. "This is the future of merchandising," said John Moritz, division VP, marketing planning at Kmart, in a statement. "It's the perfect way for online marketing to drive in-store sales, and customers win in the process."

The Gazette, a 96,351-circulation daily out of Colorado Springs, CO, is launching a series of free neighborhood papers next month in an effort to diversify its offerings for readers and advertisers. The new publications, called Ink, will be geo-targeted to 3 different retail areas in and around Colorado Springs: downtown, the west side of the city, and Manitou Springs, where it will be distributed in sales racks at local businesses.

The United States Postal Service launched a campaign today to increase awareness and create results for energy conservation at a "Turning Over a Green Leaf" event in celebration of Earth Day. The agency, which says it wants to reduce energy use 30% by 2015, exhibited "green" initiatives at the event, including the USPS' green Web site, a carbon and lifestyle calculator, an office supplies swap Web site, energy-saving tips, and Cradle to Cradle-certified "green" packaging and shipping supplies.
 

Razorfish names Bob Lord CEO, Kokich to become chairman

Direct marketing solutions provider Direct Group will be consolidating its direct mail, digital printing and fulfillment operations into one location over the remainder of this year and anticipates eliminating approximately 50 positions as a result. "We want to optimize our associates, equipment and facilities infrastructures," said Don McKenzie, president and CEO at Direct Group, of the move.

Kohl's Corp. will launch the exclusive lifestyle brand LC Lauren Conrad in October in approximately 300 stores and on Kohls.com. The multi-channel merchant is betting on Conrad's high awareness and fashion credibility among young contemporary customers. Conrad is best known as the star of the reality series The Hills. She began her fashion career as an intern at Teen Vogue.
