The healthcare reform battle has hit every level of society and now it has even encroached on the e-mail space. Concerns about unsolicited e-mails arose on Thursday last week, after White House senior advisers sent out an e-mail about healthcare with the subject line "Something worth forwarding." Some recipients and Fox News claimed that some of these e-mails were sent without the user opting in. In response to this, The White House said on Sunday it will change its e-mail sign-up procedures.

Sears launches Christmas Club card

Sears Holdings Corp. has introduced the Sears and Kmart Christmas Club gift card program, which allows consumers to save ahead for their holiday purchases at Sears and Kmart stores or online at either merchant's Web site. Consumers who sign up before October 31 can earn up to a 3% reward, up to a maximum of $100, based on upon the stored value on their cards as of November 14.

The New York Times launches mail order club

The New York Times Company announced on August 17 it has launched The New York Times Wine Club, a mail order club that has the potential to provide the embattled publisher with another source of revenue. The newspaper partnered with Global Wine Company, an outsourcer that operates wine mail order clubs for consumer brands such as Omaha Steaks, to handle the business on a turn-key basis.
 

NC agency Wildfire bolsters sports presence with buy

Winston-Salem, NC-based agency Wildfire acquired Keystone, a sports marketing agency, last month. The acquisition expanded Wildfire's existing sports marketing capabilities, allowing it to take campaigns from concept development to execution rather than having to outsource the execution, said Brad Bennett, "chief firestarter" [CEO] at Wildfire.

JCPenney reports Q2 loss

JCPenney Company Inc. reported sales for the second quarter ended August 1 decreased 7.9% for a total of $3.9 billion. Same-store sales decreased 9.5% during the same period. The company also reported a loss of $1 million for the quarter versus income of $117 million last year. Second quarter earnings broke even, compared to a gain of $0.52 per share last year.

Alliance Data acquires Charming Shoppes private label credit cards

Multichannel apparel merchant Charming Shoppes Inc. has agreed to sell its private label credit card receivables to Alliance Data Systems Corp. At the same time, the companies have entered into a 10-year agreement for Alliance Data to assume operation of the private label credit card receivables program. Charming Shoppes said it expects gross proceeds from the deal will be approximately $140 million, of which Charming Shoppes will use approximately $30 million to fund the termination of contractual obligations related to the transaction. Charming Shoppes expects the deal to close before the end of the year.
 

Sony to convert e-book store to open format

In a move to make its electronic book store compatible with multiple devices and its Sony Reader e-reader devices open to multiple sources for content, Sony has announced plans to convert the Sony eBook Store to the open format EPub e-book standard by the end of the year and adopt Adobe Content Server 4 for copy protecting downloadable e-books. "Our intention is to lead by example," said Steve Haber, president of Sony's Digital Reading Business Division, in a statement.

Advertising placed through ad networks and portals generated the smallest change for branding metrics, and in some cases made no difference for advertisers, according to findings of a study released August 13 by the Online Publishers Association, a trade organization for publishers such as ABCNews.com, CNN, CondeNet, Time Inc. and The Wall Street Journal.
