Merkle lays off 36

Database marketing agency Merkle Inc. laid off a total of 36 employees, two last week and 34 this week, according to a company spokesperson. A large number of those let go were from the account management side of the business assigned to financial services clients.
 

Sears touts multichannel capabilities

Sears Holdings Corporation is touting its multichannel retail capabilities under the banner of "ShopYourWay," and using its Web site, catalogs and other marketing vehicles to showcase services such as the ability to buy online and pick up in-store, mobile commerce and in-store Web shopping kiosks. These capabilities were previously not communicated to consumers in "a broad, coordinated way," according to a company spokesperson, via e-mail.
 

InfoGroup amends '08 earnings report

InfoGroup released an amended yearly earnings report to the SEC for 2008, which reduced its total income due to administrative expenses related to shareholder litigation last year. The company reported operating income for 2008 of $28.2 million, or 4% of net sales, down from $86.5 million, or 13% of net sales, for 2007. The primary reason for the decrease in operating income was the result of $34.3 million in non-recurring charges incurred during 2008 related to a Special Litigation Committee's investigation brought on by a shareholder lawsuit.
 

RTC launches "Advertising is (not) Dead" campaign for C-suite execs

Online video solution provider Real Time Content (RTC) has launched an integrated campaign with the tagline "Advertising is (not) Dead," an open letter to ad agencies and brands asking them to re-evaluate their online advertising efforts. The print and online campaign promotes RTC's suite of personalized video solutions.
 

ABC adapts to shrinking market, growing digital

The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) board has made several resolutions that reflect current trends in the print marketplace — including expanding measurement of digital publications and creating newspaper and magazine task forces to deal with challenges ahead. Playing into the market's growing interest in digital publishing — evidenced most recently by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's move to an online-only platform — the ABC at its meeting last week broadened its definition of digital editions.
 

TRUSTe: 95% of consumers think online privacy is a big issue

More than 95% of consumers think online privacy is an important issue, according to a study by TRUSTe, which monitors online privacy practices. Most consumers take steps to protect their privacy online, but one-third do not know their information may be collected by third parties for advertising purposes, according to the study, Consumer Attitudes About Behavioral Targeting.
