Banks increase direct marketing to customers

Although the bulk of banks' direct marketing spend is still devoted to acquiring new customers, banks are paying more attention to existing customers via direct mail and e-mail, according to a new report from Mintel Comperemedia. During 2008, banks increased direct mail offers cross-selling additional products and services to current clients by 57% over 2007. During the same period, acquisition direct mail rose 7%.
 

Amazon to close three fulfillment centers

Internet retailer Amazon.com is closing order-fulfillment centers in three states. The centers are in Munster, IN; Chambersburg, PA; and Red Rock, NV, and would affect 210 employees, according to Patty Smith, Amazon's director of corporate communications.

Purple@Epsilon has created a new position — SVP, general manager — in order to tap the health expertise of Andrew Bast, who joins the company from Saatch & Saatchi Healthcare Communications. Bast, who started at Epsilon in mid-March, is expected to help the agency grow its footprint in the pharma space. His main focus will be business development and the creation of integrated strategies for healthcare and pharma clients.
 

DDB named AOR for Soyjoy

DDB Worldwide in San Francisco has been named agency of record for Pharmavite's Soyjoy snack bars. Soyjoy is an all-natural snack made with whole soy and real fruit. DDB will manage all of the brand's marketing activity with the exception of PR, which is being handled by Porter Novelli. Tribal DDB will be involved on the digital side.
