Survey: Coupons, sales strong influence on BTS shopping so far

The average American family had completed only 41.6% of its back-to-school shopping as of August 11, according to the National Retail Federation's latest Back-to-School/College Consumers Intentions and Actions survey. The survey, which was conducted by BIGresearch, polled 8,543 consumers from August 4-11. Families of college students had completed 41% of their shopping by early August and 30.5% of families with school-aged children hadn't even started their shopping.
 

Three men arrested in largest-ever data breach

Three men were indicted in New Jersey on August 17 for stealing more than 130 million credit and debit card numbers, according to the US Department of Justice. It is the largest hacking and identity theft case ever prosecuted by the Justice Department.
 

Sears launches Christmas Club card

Sears Holdings Corp. has introduced the Sears and Kmart Christmas Club gift card program, which allows consumers to save ahead for their holiday purchases at Sears and Kmart stores or online at either merchant's Web site. Consumers who sign up before October 31 can earn up to a 3% reward, up to a maximum of $100, based on upon the stored value on their cards as of November 14.

AT&T is using the Vans Warped Tour to promote its product and services to music fans. The mobile carrier has been the official sponsor of the touring concert for seven years, but this year AT&T is using the event to demonstrate its technology offerings.
 

HP reports 2% revenue decline in Q3

HP reported net revenue declined 2% for its third fiscal quarter ended July 31 for a total of $27.5 billion. The company's net earnings totaled $1.6 billion for the quarter, down 19% year over year. Diluted earnings per share were 67 cents per share, down 16% from 80 cents per share last year. Printer unit shipments decreased 23%, with commercial printer hardware units down 42% and consumer printer hardware units down 16%.

Web.com, an online marketing company that caters to small businesses, and MerchantCircle.com, an online community of local business owners, announced the expansion of their existing partnership "to help improve the online visibility of local businesses," according to an announcement.
