USPS delays Move Update fines

The US Postal Service said it will delay implementation of the Standard Mail Move Update noncompliance charge from May 11 to January 4, 2010, in a notice filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission.
 

InfoGroup to sell Macro International

InfoGroup Inc. today announced it has entered into an agreement to sell its subsidiary Macro International Inc. to ICF International. The company acquired Macro International when it purchased research firm Opinion Research Corporation in December 2006.
 

Sprint names Euro RSCG Chicago digital AOR

Digital print is becoming an increasingly important offering of commercial printer R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, which now has more than 1,000 digital printing units across more than 60 facilities worldwide. In addition, the company reports that customer use of its CustomPoint Web-to-print portal increased 28% in 2008.
 

Amtrak to invest in CRM, data, Web

Amtrak has released plans to construct an enterprise data warehouse, develop a master data management plan, relaunch Amtrak.com for improved usability and upgrade its CRM program. The projects will be funded from the $1.3 billion Amtrak is receiving as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
 

Hoy LA cuts print frequency

The Los Angeles edition of Spanish-language paper Hoy is cutting its print frequency from daily to weekly. Hoy, which is owned by the Tribune Co., is distributed for free in targeted ZIP codes around the city, with 75,000 copies going out Mondays - Thursdays and 145,000 on Fridays. Most readers are of Hispanic descent and are bilingual or Spanish-dominant.

Banks increase direct marketing to customers

Although the bulk of banks' direct marketing spend is still devoted to acquiring new customers, banks are paying more attention to existing customers via direct mail and e-mail, according to a new report from Mintel Comperemedia. During 2008, banks increased direct mail offers cross-selling additional products and services to current clients by 57% over 2007. During the same period, acquisition direct mail rose 7%.
 

Amazon to close three fulfillment centers

Internet retailer Amazon.com is closing order-fulfillment centers in three states. The centers are in Munster, IN; Chambersburg, PA; and Red Rock, NV, and would affect 210 employees, according to Patty Smith, Amazon's director of corporate communications.

Google lays off 200

Google has laid off just under 200 sales and marketing staffers—the biggest set of layoffs in the company's history. The announcement was made in a blog post by Omid Kordestani, senior VP of global sales and business development. He wrote that Google would give each person time to try and find another position within the company, as well as provide outplacement support and severance packages for those who leave.
 

New York Times outlines pay cuts, sells off Alabama assets

The New York Times Co. is planning temporary pay cuts for most nonunion employees of 5% and will lay off 100 people, the paper reported on its Web site today. The pay reductions will run April through December, and employees will receive 10 days off in return, according to the company. The company also announced it has agreed to sell its local Alabama paper, the Times Daily, to the family-run Tennessee Valley Printing Co. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
 

Kaiser Permanente names Digitas DM AOR

Health plan provider Kaiser Permanente has named Digitas as its direct marketing agency of record. Digitas will execute both business-to-business and business-to-consumer campaigns in both the online and offline space. The budget was not disclosed. The agency will build upon the execution of Kaiser's Thrive campaign, which launched in 2004. Thrive focuses on healthy eating habits and overall fitness and nutrition. The campaign was developed by Campbell-Ewald, which will work closely with Digitas. Campbell-Ewald will remain Kaiser's advertising AOR. The two companies also have a mutual client in General Motors.
 

Valassis, Fraser Papers settle suits

Media and marketing services company Valassis Inc. and Fraser Papers have settled all legal disputes between the two companies on undisclosed terms. Fraser Papers filed a lawsuit against Valassis in the United States District Court, District of Maine, on December 8, alleging breach of contract for failure to pay for the purchase of specialty paper. Valassis filed an answer and counterclaim in January against Fraser Papers for breach of contract related to alleged defective paper purchased in 2005.
 

Jeep, Organic predict online and broadcast will win consumers

Consumers can expect to see a new media mix — heavy on online and broadcast efforts — with Jeep's marketing this year, thanks to predictive analytics work from Organic agency. Organic, which has been Jeep's digital AOR for close to a decade, used econometric modeling to build a new predictive analytics model for the carmaker. The model took macroeconomic data, demand history, media plans and the price of gas, among other things, into account and, with it, Organic was able to predict Jeep retail sales for 2008 to within 1%.
 

Alpha Media Group shuts down Blender magazine

Alpha Media Group will stop publishing Blender magazine after the April issue. The music and culture magazine, whose target audience consisted of young men, had a total paid and verified circulation of 912,739 and has been increasing steadily over the past few years.

Dial-A-Mattress Corp. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and plans to sell the 1800mattress.com business to the largest mattress retailer in the country, Sleepy's. Creditors filed an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition against Dial-A-Mattress last week, seeking approximately $1.7 million. Typically, this would result in the liquidation of the company. After receiving offers from several interested parties last week, Dial-A-Mattress decided to file to convert the Chapter 7 bankruptcy to a Chapter 11 filing, which would allow it to reorganize and complete the sale to Sleepy's.
