Microsoft launches Twitter haiku contest for IT pros

Microsoft launched an online haiku contest this month targeting IT professionals. To win a home theater system and an Xbox 360 Elite console, IT pros can submit their best haikus about the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system via Twitter or the campaign's microsite, R2Haiku.com.
 

HP printing group sees 15% year-over-year revenue decline for fiscal Q4

HP disclosed fiscal fourth-quarter net revenues of $6.5 billion for its Imaging and Printing Group, a 14% increase from the $5.7 billion recorded during the company's fiscal third quarter but a 14.8% decrease year over year from the $7.6 billion of last year's Q4. For FY 2009, HP reported net revenues of $24 billion for imaging and printing, a decrease of nearly 19% from the $29.6 billion reported last fiscal year.
 

TiVo and Google partner to measure Google TV Ads

TiVo has teamed up with Google to measure the audience reach of Google TV Ads. Terms of the deal, announced November 24, were not disclosed. This agreement will let Google TV Ads gather DVR-viewing data from TiVo's subscribers.
 

Spam more often containing social media links: MessageLabs

The number of spam e-mail messages containing social media links is on the rise. Security firm MessageLabs detected an attack in mid-November that raised the amount of these messages from only a fraction of a percent to 4% of all spam.

Goodmail Systems and Epostmarks have introduced "Postmarked Email," a platform that places US Postal Service Electronic Postmarks on Web messages via Goodmail's CertifiedEmail platform. The platform's goal is to further secure e-mails so that messages that typically rely on the security of the mail, such as transactional statements from banks or credit card information, can now be sent via e-mail.

Looking back over the past decade, I continue to marvel at the power, promise and precision offered by e-mail. It can be a highly effective tool to communicate, build relationships and drive consumer action. Unfortunately, marketers and e-mail service providers often fail to look beyond deliverability and open rates, and fail to consider the end-to-end consumer experience. Marketers tend to forget there is a person behind the e-mail address. It is the customer's e-mail address, not yours. Any other way of thinking is poor etiquette.
