Yahoo profits down 78%, cuts 5% of work force

Yahoo has reported a 78% drop in profits in the first quarter of 2009 to $118.7 million, compared to $536.8 million in the first quarter of last year. Yahoo also is cutting more than 600 jobs, 5% of its worldwide work force. Total revenues were $1.58 billion, down 13% from 1.817 billion a year ago. Gross profits also were down from $1.06 billion in 2008 to $879 million this year.
 

Survey: DM job market may have hit bottom

While the direct marketing industry continues to be hit by layoffs and hiring freezes, there are signs of some improvement over the recent past, especially on the agency side, according to the latest employment report from Bernhart Associates. "Overall, hiring levels are still falling but the worst of the job losses may be over," said Jerry Bernhart, principal at Bernhart Associates Executive Search LLC, in a statement.

Acxiom and Privo to create "Do Not Contact" registry for children

Acxiom Corp. has teamed up with Privacy Vaults Online Inc. (Privo) to create a do-not-contact online registry for children. The Protect My Child Registry is slated to go live by third quarter 2009. It combines Acxiom's identity management and data assets with Privo's online youth registration and parental permission tools to allow parents to create "do not contact" profiles for registered children.
 

Fry to launch new Web site for Pendleton

Apparel and blanket manufacturer Pendleton Woolen Mills has engaged Fry Inc. to replatform, design and host its Web site. The new site is scheduled to launch this summer and will use Fry's Open Commerce Platform with the intention of expanding Pendleton's e-commerce business and allowing its small staff to better manage merchandising and promotions.
 

ABCSearch rebrands as Advertise.com

Internext Media Corp-owned pay-per-click (PPC) search network ABCSearch has acquired Advertise.com. Now, all of ABCSearch's services will be transitioned under the Advertise.com Inc. brand. Over the next six months, the company will be rolling out new technologies to provide multiple integrated programs, including PPC, local and contextual targeting, as well as display ads.
