Kevin Rose, founder and chief architect of community content-ranking site Digg, shared his thoughts on how user-generated content can be monetized and used to engage consumers during this morning's ad:tech San Francisco keynote. Evan Hansen, editor-in-chief of Wired.com, interviewed the entrepreneur. Rose said that his site, which was largely founded to democratize content online, was now seeking to create a way for consumers to respond directly to advertisers about products and promotions.
 

UPS earnings drop nearly 56%

UPS Inc. today reported first quarter revenue of $10.9 billion, down 13.7% from the same quarter last year, and saw its earnings fall nearly 56% to $401 million, compared to profit of $906 million a year ago.

Kmart, CVS, Walgreens and H-E-B are the latest retailers to put printable coupons on their Web sites supplied through Coupons.com's digital coupon distribution network. "This is the future of merchandising," said John Moritz, division VP, marketing planning at Kmart, in a statement. "It's the perfect way for online marketing to drive in-store sales, and customers win in the process."

Colorado paper targets local audiences with free pub

The Gazette, a 96,351-circulation daily out of Colorado Springs, CO, is launching a series of free neighborhood papers next month in an effort to diversify its offerings for readers and advertisers. The new publications, called Ink, will be geo-targeted to 3 different retail areas in and around Colorado Springs: downtown, the west side of the city, and Manitou Springs, where it will be distributed in sales racks at local businesses.
 

Wildlife Conservation magazine axed in restructuring

Wildlife Conservation, the magazine of the non-profit Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), has published its last issue. The bi-monthly had 92,000 subscribers, who were informed of its demise in the editor's note in the final issue.
