Looking to improve its position in the direct mail, transactional and transpromo markets, HP announced a technology alliance with RR Donnelley last week to develop digital printing solutions for inkjet-based digital presses.
 

Twitter now allowing ads

Microblogging sensation Twitter changed its terms of service on September 10 to allow for advertising on the platform. While Twitter did not specify what types of available ad units it might offer, co-founder Biz Stone said in a blog post that the company will "leave the door open for advertising."

Media and relationship marketing agency Maxus named Louis Jones CEO for North America, effective September 8. He replaced Carla Loffredo, who was named the agency's first COO. He reports to global CEO Kelly Clark.
 

HP and Pitney Bowes partner to offer integrated print and mail system

HP and Pitney Bowes announced an alliance at the Print 09 trade show on September 11 through which Pitney will manage sales of the HP Inkjet Web Press for the transactional and trans-promotional print markets. Pitney will offer the product as part of the Pitney Bowes IntelliJet Printing System, which is used by large volume mailers. The system includes the HP T300 Color Inkjet engine, a high-speed Pitney Bowes mail finishing system, and a single service and support team.

Last week, Sultan Munadi, an Afghan interpreter, was killed during a conflict in northern Afghanistan that resulted in the release of New York Times reporter Stephan Farrell from Taliban captivity. Munadi had tried to express his and Farrell's neutrality when they were initially detained by the Taliban months ago. Following this tragedy, I paused this week to think about the role of an interpreter in a much less extreme example — namely, how it relates to e-commerce.
