AOL buys StudioNow, accelerating online video play

AOL acquired StudioNow, an online video company for $36.5 million in cash and stock, in order to accelerate its investment in content technology and platforms. With the acquisition, which closed on January 22, AOL has aggregated more than 3,000 editors, videographers and creative individuals to provide on-demand video content. It will also provide management, storage and syndication services to clients. AOL intends to integrate the video platform into its existing Seed.com content management system.

DMA matches FTC guidelines on endorsements, blogger payments

The Direct Marketing Association has revised its ethics guidelines to align them with the Federal Trade Commission's recently altered Guides for Testimonials and Endorsements. Both sets of rules affect the marketing of product or service results, as well as blogger and celebrity endorsements.
 

Valassis to manage list in house

Valassis announced January 25 that it will bring management of Valassis Lists products, including its 151 million-universe mailing list, in-house. The file is currently managed by ALC, which will do so until March 5. NFocus Consulting will continue to handle fulfillment and technology for the list.

Amount of coupons issued, used jumped in 2009

Last year saw the first year-over-year increase in coupon redemption since 1992, according to a report from transaction settlement provider Inmar. Consumers redeemed 3.3 billion consumer packaged goods coupons in 2009, compared to 2.6 billion the year before. Marketers embraced the behavioral shift, distributing 367 billion coupons in total — the highest number on record since Inmar began tracking coupon use in 1988.
