After speculation and rumors for the past month or so, Microsoft Corporation has sold its digital agency Razorfish to the Publicis Groupe SA holding company in a transaction valued at approximately $530 million in cash and treasury shares.

Target to assume control of e-commerce biz from Amazon

In a sign of the growing importance of e-commerce to major retailers, Target has become the latest merchant to end a relationship with Amazon that saw the latter providing e-commerce technology, customer service, inventory, site content and fulfillment of online orders for several major retailers during the past decade. Target, which has had a partnership with Amazon since 2001, said it plans to build and manage its own platform for Target.com, which it expects to launch prior to the holiday season in 2011.
 

Fandango runs mobile banner ads to promote new G.I. Joe film

Online movie destination Fandango is running a new mobile marketing effort to promote the Paramount Pictures summer blockbuster film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which opens August 7.
 

iCrossing taps UK CEO

iCrossing, a digital marketing agency, announced August 6 that it has named Paul Doleman as CEO of its UK operation. He was previously chief technology officer. Doleman replaces Arjo Ghosh, who becomes chairman. As chairman, Ghosh will remain actively involved in the business with a focus on strategic direction and, in particular, European growth, the company said in a press release. Doleman will be based in iCrossing's Brighton office.
 

Intergi to manage online advertising for Tower Records

Tower Records has signed an exclusive advertising agreement with Intergi to represent and supply advertising opportunities for the Tower.com Web site. Tower.com offers an extensive collection of online music, home entertainment video and books. "As the Tower brand expands to include video games and accessories, our partnership with Intergi will play a significant role in providing our customers with a dynamic and accessible shopping environment," said Sabrina Miller, marketing manager for Tower.com, in a statement.

Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) will expanded a newsstand promotion that was tested last year for a full-on, regional, in-store campaign, launching Friday. Supermarkets in the Pennsylvania area, with some spillover into New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia, will host the campaign, designed to encourage newsstand sales of consumer magazines.

Sinclair Oil, InfoPrint deal brings transpromo to b-to-b space

In one of the first significant applications of transpromo techniques in the business-to-business arena, Sinclair Oil Corp. has chosen InfoPrint Solution Co.'s transpromo software to drive usage of a fuel and expense card for truckers. "This is significant to see relevant content being used in this way move into the b-to-b space," said Lee Gallagher, manager of direct marketing solutions at InfoPrint.

Newspapers, buffeted by this year's downturn in print advertising revenue, are increasingly looking to new online revenue strategies. The Financial Times (FT) is the latest example of this push for online cash, with its announcement that it is considering a "pay-as-you-read" model for its content on the Web.
